Founded in 1985, Staglin Family Vineyard is a small family-owned winery devoted to producing fantastic wines which support some incredible causes in the heart of Napa Valley. Farmed organically and completely solar powered, Staglin Family Vineyard wines are consistently rated among the top wines in each vintage. Amber Mihna, the National Sales Manager for Staglin Family Vineyard, will join us to share her expertise on the wines we’ll be enjoying with Chef Jeremy Martin’s multi-course menu.
We caught up with Amber this week to talk about her upcoming trip to New England for this very special wine dinner.
Which wine are you most looking forward to sharing with our guests and why?
Amber Mihna: I’m quite excited to share our flagship wine, the Staglin Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Staglin Family Vineyard has been producing this Cabernet Sauvignon since our first year, 1985. It’s a highly-rated, small-production wine that that is organically farmed and produced, with some of the oldest cabernet sauvignon vineyards in Napa Valley. We will be tasting two of our Cabernet Sauvignons; the 2014 (96 points) and the 2013 (97 points), paired with the main course of grilled bone-in veal chop, English peas and heirloom carrots, duchess potatoes, and sauce Bordelaise.
In your opinion, what makes Staglin wines unique from other Napa Valley wines?
AM: Staglin Family Vineyard is a small, family-owned winery that is located on the magical Rutherford Benchland. We are estate grown, which means that we own all our own vineyards, which isn’t quite typical in Napa Valley. We’re 100% solar-powered, we make our own olive oil off our 400 olive trees on the estate and also have 8 bee boxes that provide us with delicious estate honey. We also donate 100% of the proceeds of our Salus label to mental and brain health research. We started this charity in 1989 and have given over 280 million dollars since then.
How did you come to be an ambassador for Staglin Family Vineyard and how long have you been with the organization?
AM: I am originally from Wisconsin where I worked in the wine business with distribution and was a sommelier. About 5 years ago, Napa Valley Vintners, the trade organization for all of Napa Valley and its wineries, moved me to Napa Valley to represent Napa Valley for North America. I worked with the Staglins then and transitioned full time to the winery over a year ago. I travel extensively selling and educating our wines and speak at Staglin wine dinners all over the world. This year alone I have already been to 11 states in just three months!
Besides Staglin, what is your favorite vineyard?
AM: Locally, I enjoy bubbly so it is always a good day to visit Schramsberg Vineyards in Calistoga. I am also a fan of driving north to the Anderson Valley. I am lucky to travel the world and also love Piedmonte in Italy, Champagne in France and look forward to my upcoming trip to New Zealand.
